Blood Donors
Southern Vales and the Southern School Challenge
Each year we encourage our senior students to give blood and a number have become donors. Congratulations to all students who have become blood donors and continue to do so – it’s a great thing to do and a great way to serve the wider community.
As a school we participate in the Red Cross "Southern School Challenge" - a competition across schools which encourages blood donation (we came equal first in 2008). However, although competition is good, the most important thing is giving blood as often as possible - it does save lives.
Mr David McAvenna (Mr Clayton's Personal Assistant) has been a blood donor since his first year of work (a few years back!). When asked about his commitment to giving blood he responded,
"I was introduced to blood donation by a work colleague in 1969 and remember nervously giving my first donation. It was straight forward and I have been donating blood ever since. I see it as one way of giving back to the wider community - something that saves lives and helps others."
In order to give blood, you must be at least 16 – any students who have turned 16 recently and would like to talk to someone about giving blood, please speak to one of our Red Cross Youth Ambassadors.
To find out more about the eligibility criteria for donating blood please call 13 14 95 or visit donateblood.com.au.
Any family members wanting to donate blood can do so by contacting the Red Cross as indicated above.
Why give blood?
One in three people will require blood in their lifetime but currently only one in 30 people donates. Every week more than 27,000 blood donations are needed around Australia to help people including those with cancer, patients undergoing surgery, burns victims, mums-to-be and premature babies. By giving blood, Southern Vales Christian College will help these Australians receive the treatment they need.
